“Our Lady of Succour” by Nicolò Alunno on loan to the Muzeum Narodowe w Krakowie (Krakow National Museum)

Following the theme running through World Youth Day held in Krakow from 26th to 31st July 2016 – “Blessed are the merciful for they shall obtain mercy” (Matt. 5, 7) – the John Paul II Youth Foundation of the Pontifical Council for the Laity continues its well established tradition of accompanying the event with a great art exhibition, organising an important show entitled “Maria Mater Misericordiae. Masterpieces of European Art”.
The exhibition will be held at the Krakow National Museum and will centre on the image of the Virgin, so dear to Pope Wojtyła and to Poland. For around four months, absolute masterpieces will be on show by artists of the calibre of Michelangelo, Giovanni Bellini, Francisco de Zurbaran, Correggio, Mantegna, Titian, Annibale Carracci, Sebastiano del Piombo, Fra Angelico, and Raphael, to name only some of the best known.
La mostra sarà ospitata presso il Museo Nazionale di Cracovia e avrà al suo centro l’immagine della Madonna tanto cara a Papa Wojtyła e alla Polonia, vedrà esposti per circa quattro mesi capolavori assoluti di artisti del calibro di Michelangelo Buonarroti, Giovanni Bellini, Francisco de Zurbaran, Correggio, Andrea Mantegna, Tiziano Vecellio, Annibale Carracci, Sebastiano del Piombo, Beato Angelico, Raffaello Sanzio, solo per citare alcuni dei più noti.
